We had the Governor, Alan Huckle, leave on the 18th September, so we went along to the farewell parade. It was held at Victory Green on a very cold and windy morning, with HMS Clyde moored in the harbour.
He always arrives to functions in a London Taxi. We found out that this was being retired on the same day, and had given lots of service throughout its life, which also included carrying Rex Hunt from Government House when the Argentineans invaded in 1982.
Part of the parade involved an inspection of the HM Forces, Falkland Island Defence Force (FIDF) and also civilian services.
There was a 17 gun salute using the saluting guns that are on Victory Green.
The ceremony also included the handing over of the ceremonial sword, signifying the end of his Governorship.
I had an invite to go to the farewell party at Government house afterwards, which was interesting. Lots of G&T, and appetisers, including......cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off!!! Given that a price of a cucumber in the West Store is £6, we felt honoured!!! No photos allowed, but it certainly was interesting to be able to visit the house where previous prime ministers such as Maggie Thatcher, and members of the royal family had been for functions.
