October/Novermber Catchup.....

Been a while since we updated....September we were very close to our bandwidth limit, and we went over our 3.3gb bandwidth allowance in October by quite a large amount, and ended up having to pay excess charges.  Today, 30th November, we have used 2gb....and we're not allowed to carry over unused bandwidth.....grrrrrr..

Our Asda order arrived at the same time as Neil and Michelle's shipping at the end of September.  We had taken Josie out of their way as it took three cars to collect their shipping!  They brought everything with them, not quite the kitchen sink, but almost!!! Needless to say, an hour after Neil and Michelle got the call to say their shipping was here, we got the call as well!  Josie and Harry wanted to carry the cat food to Helen, as she had ordered it.  It was far too heavy for them, so they put it on the scooter and pushed it round.  Helen only lives 6 doors down!  The next boat contained another couple of car loads of shipping for Neil and Michelle too!!!

The following weekend we went to Gypsy Cove as the penguins had arrived back that week.  The males arrive back first and establish the nests.  This one had decided to take some time out and sun himself!

There were also several turkey vultures around.  They are damn ugly birds!!

With spring in the air, everything is busy nesting, ad these rock shags are no exception.  They build their nests right on the edge of the cliffs so they are safe from predators.

Harry was full of confidence and was rock climbing!

He was particularly happy to find this inquisitive young sea lion, although it may have been eyeing Harry up as a meal!!  After about 5 minutes of watching us, it decided to head off back to the water and watch us from there.

Really worrying for us was walking through the tussac grass which grows in huge clumps, we stumbled across a big male and his mate.  We almost stood on them, and had to beat a hasty retreat before those razor sharp teeth got us!  They were massive, standing taller than Harry, and probably around 4-500kg in weight.

Once they had calmed down, we were able to watch them from safety, at a distance of about 30 feet.

We visited the Argentine cemetery just outside Darwin.  The cemetery is a political statement by the Argentinians.  They refuse to repatriate the bodies, as they consider they are already buried in Argentine soil.  The names of the dead, including those from the General Belgrano, are carved into a wall at the top of the cemetery near the main large cross.

With the row upon row of white crosses it is reminiscent of a WW1 cemetery.......

.....even down to the large numbers of graves containing "a soldier known unto god"

After a stop at the Galley Cafe for lunch, we headed for the Bodie Creek Bridge.  This is the most southerly suspension bridge in the world, and was built to cut amount of time needed to drive sheep from Lafonia to the shearing station at Goose Green.  It was built 1925, and finally closed to traffic in 1997, although people do still walk across it.

The "road" to the bridge is a mud track, and this was also Ruth's first off road driving experience....she loved it!

This is the first view of the bridge as you approach it from Goose Green.

I know I certainly would not want to cross it.......the bridge is looking a little worse for wear!!

It was blowing a gale the day we visited, you can see the effect of the wind as you look along the bridge!

Even in its dilapidated state, it still looks very impressive!

...and these are the shearing sheds, although they were built after the bridge!  They were used to house the Argentine prisoners after the battle for Goose Green in 1982, hence the "POW" and "PG" on the sides

Shearing had just finished, and this young lad was helping to move the sheep back into camp.

2 Para memorial at Darwin

...and the view to Goose Green from the memorial.  It amazes me how open the ground is that 2 Para had to advance over...

The Port Harriet Family Funday had a stand from FIDF.  Harry decided he wanted to play with the pistols....and he tried to take them home!

He did like the 50 cal sniper rifle which we have.....

and he wants our Land Rover to have a Browning 50 cal Heavy Machine Gun mounted on it....

Harry decided to shoot down the Typhoons which were overhead!

He was upset he couldn't drive the quad, especially as this one had a GPMG on the back.....

...so he had to settle for a ride with Dad....

Remembrance Sunday was a windy affair this year.  Last year was glorious sunshine....  Whilst Harry and Dawn waited for the parade to start, Harry played on the grass

Simon was on parade this time, although Remembrance Sunday is done in greens.

The wind blew the berets around, though fortunately none where lost!

His Excellency the Governor and Commander British Forces South Atlantic Islands lead the wreath laying

Simon was one of several people sporting a "movember" moustache!
